Sadu Chiru Waterfall - Natural scenic beauty near Imphal

- By Pupu Zou

Just about 25 kms from the state capital, one of the best site/spot for spending a holiday with family and friends. Sadu Chiru Waterfall is no doubt the most popular waterfall in Manipur. The waterfall is around 15m high and came cascading down from thick tropical forest. This is famous for its perennial Water Fall in a scenic foot hill.

The Physics & Chemistry: Lets talk a little bit about the physics and chemistry of Sadu Chiru Waterfall. Unlike other waterfall, this waterfall does not develop a deep trench at the foot where the falling water hits the ground thereby the force of pulling gravity is almost absent. Therefore, it is not dangerous to reach till the wall of the falling water. The water level is just knee deep and nothing to worry about sinking in the water. Sadu Chiru Waterfall Latitude is 24.7316 and Longitude is 93.7627.

The journey: The distance form Imphal to the destination is just 30 minutes drive. One need to travel through Keishampat, Nambol on Tedim line (NH-150). After crossing Nambol bazaar, you will witness one small park known as "Japanese War Memorail" at the left side of the road. Continue the smooth drive to about 100 meters and you will see the signboard which indicate you to take right turn. From there the approach road is narrow but pucca and smooth, its time to pull out your digital camera and capture the lovely landscape and scenic views of the hills and valley conjunctures. Right after crossing Leimaram village, the foothill starts and vehicle gears needs to be changed. It is just 4/5 km from the plain area.

The Parking Lot: After climbing for almost 5-10 minutes in the hills, you will be welcome with the sound of the forest deep in the green woods. There is plenty of space for parking and a number of dhabas to quench your thirst. Here, you can get tribal super thumps-up (local wine), organic green vegetables, ready to used utensils for picnic party and ample of space for recreation.

The Cold Breeze: From the parking space till the waterfall, you will need to climb round about 500 steps. It is worth sweating and suffocating throughout the steep slope. On your way to the dreamland, you will be welcome with different sounds of birds and insects, if you are a good poetry writer i assure you, you will return with a dozen of songs. The moment you reach the dreamland, the cold sparkling breeze will wipe your face and all your worries will vanished.

Pack your gears: If you are going there, you will need to pack some items. Spare shirt, spare pant, spare innerwears, towel, etc. Whoever climb till the waterfall never returns dry. Enjoy the beauty, take a deep, get wet and enjoy the beauty.

Points to note: Sadu Chiru Village Authority has banned carrying of eatable items at Sadu Chiru Waterfall area beyond the public parking area to prevent the increasing volume of pollution in and around the waterfall area. Gambling activities and other action that may disturbed the visitors will also be fined besides taking up appropriate action as according to the law of the land.

The Fees: First, the office of Irengbam Gram Panchayat, Bishnupur CD Block under Bishnupur district collects Rs. 20 as entry toll tax for four wheeler. Second, Thaangsi Waterfall Sadu Kuki/Chiru Development Committee, Sadar Hills, Senapati also charge Rs. 30 per four wheeler as entry/visitors fee. Lastly, by reaching the venue you will need to pay Rs. 5 per head and Rs. 10/20/30/50 depending on the type of vehicle you drive.

An Anecdote: On July 30, 2008 telegraphindia.com reported that a controversy over the name of a waterfall in Sadar Hills in Senapati district marred the foundation laying ceremony of a tourism project. Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh was scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Rs 3-crore project but he reportedly stayed away since the two warring villages, Sadu Chiru and Loibui Khunou failed to solve the dispute over the waterfall’s name, now called Sadu Chiru waterfalls. The then Tourism Minister T.N. Haokip finally did the honours an hour behind schedule.

The report said that villagers of Sadu Chiru Youth Club discovered the waterfall (tawng in Chiru language) while clearing a jungle for expansion of the village in 2005. A dispute arose after the chief of a neighbouring village, Loibui Khunou, objected to inclusion of name of Sadu Chiru tribe in the tourist spot’s nomenclature because Loibui Khunou has donated 500 acres for the tourism project to Sadu Chiru’s 12.35 acres said the report.

The origin of the waterfall is Loiching Chingdon in Leibol Khunou and that the current of the waterfall is usually strong during the month of June and July, the time when visitors throng it. It is located under Kangpokpi District of Manipur state.

My Observation: The area can be further developed to attract foreign tourists if the state government pokes in. If infrastructure is well developed, drawing tourist whether domestic or foreign will be much simpler and there can be economic growth in the area.
