MY FIRST VISIT TO MANIPUR BHAVAN AND THE FINDINGS

It may sound awkward that being a Manipuri and have been staying in Delhi for the past several years visited his home state bhavan for the first time very recently, indeed it is only also on November 20, 2007.

I was there for an official meeting with one of the worker, I reached the place by 09.00 hours, what shocks me in the first place was that non, not even the receptionist was nowhere to be seen. I waited for another half an hour, only then the receptionist trun in, while inquiring about the big bosses, i was told that they will be at their respective seats at the earliest. I again waited for another half an hour, still the same, no one turns up. By that time, i came to realised that Manipur Standard Time is also implemented in the capital city bhavan of Manipur. With my Manipur delay tactic, i patiently waited for the big fishes to turn up. It was already 10.00 hours, I was exhausted and think of loitering around and inside the building as far as i could penetrate.
Walking down the basement, I saw one old lady, sitting at a small cabin, I approached her, while almost touching her table, she came to know that someone is approaching her. Without giving me a chance to address her, she talk to me in Meitei lawn, she seems like seeing her lost sons, (this makes me realised that, I am not the only one who hardly visited this bhavan, but there are many Manipuri who doesnot care to visit their state bhavan), after inquiring about my appointment and other related informations, we came to know that we are hailing from the same locality in Imphal.
She then start all this iritating discussions. At the very outset, she told me about the bhavan environment and how they (i.e. the manipuri workers) faced a hardship in our own state bhavan. She told me that they were in some way or indirectly harash by their co-workers (i.e the mayangs). I was told that the Mayangs wanted all the Manipuris to be taken out of our bhavan. So sad!!

ABOUT THE BHAWAN

The State Guest House at New Delhi known as the Manipur Bhawan is situated at 2, Sardar Patel Marg, Chanakyapuri. This three-storied building has a total of 25 rooms out of which the 8 top floor rooms are earmarked for Ministers and other important visitors. All the rooms have attached bathrooms and those at the first and third floors are air-conditioned and provided with television and telephone connections. A special suite is kept earmarked for the Governor and the Chief Minister of the State. The office of the Resident Commissioner and other staffs are located in this Bhawan. A facilitation centre is being added to the Bhawan, which will provide ministerial and other office assistance to government officials on official visit to Delhi.

Another Guest House called the Manipur Tikendrajit House has been recently opened at 6, Bir Tikendrajit Road at Chanakyapuri near the Chanakya cinema hall. This new Bhawan has 9 double rooms and 12 single rooms all of which are air-conditioned. In addition there are 2 dormitories to cater to students and other group travelers. The 9 double rooms are designated as VIP rooms and kept earmarked for MLAs and other senior Government officials.


There are common facilities like a reception and a private mess in both the Guest Houses. The room rents are highly subsidized and priority is given to public representatives and officials who visit Delhi on official work.

CLEARING THE UNCLEARED MIND OF A DOUNTFUL MAN

It was in the year 2007, June the 29th. A group of a few guys were in a rented room in Munirka, New Delhi. While we were talking about something related to our community, all of a sudden, one of our fellow guy stop all of us in the middle of our discussion. He said, "I have a question to ask and need the answer right now, if you guys can answer I would really appreciate it". We all laughed with amazement; he again starts his words and raised this vividly worth answering question.

The worth answering question is "Why the name of the Zo/Zou is being neglected by the other Zomi community while writing or speaking about the Zomi, why it is not mentioned when some body speaks about the Zomis?".

After hearing such an unexpected and interesting question, we all make some kind of rustling sound at each other, one of our ignorant friend simply replied "it indicates that we are worthless to mention". By hearing this brainless and muddle headed response, I somehow got angry and make him shut his empty lunatic mouth. I asked all of them to listen carefully and tell them they should not disturb me while I am talking. So, I let them sit like a small kids surrounding their teacher and start narrating my lecture.

Dear friends, if you don't mind let me elaborate this topic a little bit deeper so as to understand and got the root points of my lecture. The the history of the Zo people, the Zo/Zou, as we all know is the only tribe, which treasured the originality/ancient history of the ZO/ZOU. After several research and studies which i have gone through, i was convinced that most of the dialects, i mean the Zo suon dialects comes from the Zo/Zou people. The Zo/Zou people are the one who first started to make understand our brethren that they too are Zo/Zou/Zomi. If you see in the history of the Zo/Zou people, the Zo/Zou speaking people are the people who called themselves Zo/Zou even while the others are unaware of their belongingness called us Zo/Zou naptol. To mention a few out of many worth mentioning ownership, I would like to tell you one more thing. The Zo/Zou people are known as the intepu or intepi of the Zomi. You may also heard that "Zou" is the tribe name of the particular Zou Community in Manipur and "Zo" is the name of all Zo decendants. This is bulshit and baseless. Zou may be a recognised tribe is Manipur but there is no reason of differentiating the spelling between Zo or Zou. It is one and the same. If you believe that Zo is for all the Zo decendants and Zou is only for a particular Zou community, you are 100 per cent misleaded.

For all these reasons, the recently awakened Zo suons deem it unnecessary to mention the word Zo/Zou while they speak about the Zomi, because they know that Zo/Zou is the owner or so to say, the intehpi or intepu. That means, they know that we are already in that very topic. Just to make you clearer, with my sincere apologies to our Zo brethren, While we talk about Zomi, one has to mention Paite Zomi/Zo, Thadou Zomi/Zo, Gangte Zomi/Zo, Simte Zomi/Zo, Tedim Zomi/Zo etc. etc., it is clear that one does not have to mention Zou/Zo Zomi. It signifies that Zou/Zo are already in the Zomi itself. As I have told you earlier, the other communities like Paite, Simte, Thadou, Gangte or others are the name which comes from/according to our dwelling place or comes from the name of the sons' of Pu Zou/Zo, we need to mention them while talking about Zomi.

After lecturing these short facts, my friends surprisingly greeted me, saying, wowwww!!!! Tungnung, you are incredible, where the hell did you get all this knowledge? "This is the fact that every one ought to know, it is simple, one can learn these things from our day-to-day life" said replied.

We then went out and have a cup of tea.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREER



As I observed, most of us are helpless after completing certain standards in our academic life. Though I was asked to write an article on “I Nam leh Hiemngamna”, I was convinced to write on this as I found it more relevant in our society. Sorry for that. I don’t mean that I am the perfect person to change & write up my own choice of topic. Hope our editorial board bears with me.

A wrong person in the right place or a right person in the wrong place? As the cliché goes, most of the career aspirants stand at crossroads after doing their graduation/diploma/master. Most of the time it is too late to make a choice.

An intermediate from biological sciences for example, after hacing failed in the examination takes up arts subjects. Such approaches generally end up in frustration and unemployment.

So, please select a professional approached for the selection of your career. Use the following questions for a better vision of your present and future:

· What do I want to become in life?
· Why do I want to become that?
· Where will it take me?
· When can I achieve that?
· Who will help me in that?
· How will I reach there?

Only your interest matters

The pursuance of a career starts from intermediate or 10+2. After doing +2, one must ask him/herself what he/she should do next. One must measure oneself on the SWOT scale. That means….

Strength – In what respect one is stronger than other aspirants. What quality does one possess (even if one has more physical strength than average), may be command on language, voice quality, ability to express or a good handwriting even!

Weakness – Access what your weaknesses are. Try to overcome them. Don’t let these weaknesses overcome you; rather make use of it as a stepping-stone to volt into the higher steps.

Opportunities – Explore the opportunity around you. Are you a local person specializing in a particular field? Can you be the first person to grab the opportunity? Whatever it may be, try to grab it.

Threats – Asses threats also. Not only professional hazards but also others like lifespan of a particular trade, competition from other aspirants, legislation against any kind of trade or job and veracity of employer etc. If such threats exist, what is your alternative plan of action?

Only SWOT analysis of your career is not sufficient. It should also be accessed in the light of CROW.

Concrete – You are not supposed to build castles in the air. Keep your vision clear. Know where you are going to be employed.

Realistic – The profession or career by you should be realistic based on analysis and hard facts.

Objective oriented – A well-defined objective should guide your approach. “Lets do it, and see the outcome” approach should be avoided.

Workable – The chosen field by you should be full of working potentiality.

Self-Assessment

Self-assessment is very easy. At any given night, before going to bed just note down details of your day’s activities like what have you done today, what time you devoted on each activities and what were the outcome of those activities. Note down all the positive and negative aspects of the day’s activity.

Let us review your plan of action: -

· Assess yourself on SWOT basis.
· Identify your field of interest.
· Adopt pragmatic and positive approach.
· Stop daydreaming.
· Try innovative ideas.
· Be sure what you are doing.
· Do not make decision in a hasty manner.
· Job satisfaction should be your priority (not becoming an overnight millionaire) and that means you should become what you always craved for. This develops interest in job and this improves your efficiency and in turn, it gradually elevates you in your career ladder.
· There is always a certain element of failure in your endeavor, so keep an alternative plan ready.
· Create and nurture tangible and intangible treasure of knowledge, inculcate a habit of collecting, preserving and studying books and materials.
· Don’t be bookworms; gather information wherever it comes from.
· Learn to listen and listen to learn.
· Be honest with yourself.
· Be systematic in everything you do. Divorces the attitude of “takes it easy, it will be fine.”

Your interest in your job makes you satisfy and your employer happy. This increases your efficiency and in turn, your career prosperous. Just go for excellence in whatever you know or are interested. Make it a career of your choice, not chance.

Fall Centres, Oh! Call Centres

The recent examinations conduct by the Delhi Times shows that, Call Centres is no longer an alternative place to work in. The attraction has seemingly boomeranged into repulsion for Gen. X. Today the dropout rate among the 20-30-age group at Call Centres is as high as the industry’s growth and the profile of the pros working there is in a state of transition.

Call Centres, inspite of it many disadvantages, has been the fastest growing sector in the Indian IT industry-both in terms of the number of people being hired and revenues generated-is the IT enabled services segment comprising Call Centres and Business Process Outsourcing (ITES-BPO) sector. This sector added 70,000 jobs in the last financial year, according to NASSCOM, the apex industry body of software and service companies in India. NASSCOM also estimates that by 2008, these will be 2,70,000 jobs in the customer interaction service sectors.

IT-enabled services are support functions and services for customers provided either through the telephone and web based channels. Where as, BPOs are companies, which provide similar functions and services but not from the country where the products have been sold. So, what is Call Centre job all about and why is it becoming a dream job for thousands of young people, many of whom are not even completing their graduation.

There are various types of Call Centres. Any company can set up its own Call Centre to deal with its own customer’s (i.e. a captive call centre) or they can hire a professional firm (i.e. a their-party call centre) to do the job for them. Function-wise too, they are divided into inbound and outbound Call Centres. Outbound Call Centres are places where operators-or Customer Service Associates, as they are called-make calls to the existing or prospective customers. Where as, at inbound Call Centres, the process is reversed and the Customer Service associates takes or received calls from the existing or prospective customers.

Call Centres can also be classified into Domestic and International. In the former, you work for an Indian based companies and deals with its Indian customers alone. The later deals with foreign customers of foreign companies, where you have to pretend yourself a foreigner besides flawless spoken English.

The selection process for the job of Call Centre Associate is not an easy task. Since the bulk of growth is happening in the BPO category, fluency in English is an absolute must. Your spoken English has to be flawless; its not just a matter of grammar, the way you talk must be void of any regional accent or MTI-Mother Tongue Influence. To be an associate, one has to acquire standard XII as a minimum qualification, but graduate is preferred. BCA, B.Sc. (Computer Sc.) can also apply for technical support jobs. Some firms take BE or Btech graduates too.

Most Call Centres offered 24/7 (24 hours a day and 7 days a week) support function round the clock. Willingness to work night shift is a must. It’s something that our parents taught us against; the teacher at school was extremely critical about and something that instances indiscipline. Yes, getting late! Not being punctual is something that all of us experience at some point in time. It grows into a problem only when it becomes a recurring phenomenon. Nevertheless, the paradigms have shifted of late. In most places, unlike in the olden days, we are not monitored for the work scheduled we keep; the quality and the end result achieved are important. What we are, however, evaluated on is being on time for meetings and other important occasions.

Every time we are late, we made an impression of being careless, not being sensitive to other people’s time and worst of all not respecting others. This impression, if strengthened over a period of time, can be more damaging to our career then anything else. The other factor is that when we are late, we try to either conjure up the most absurd of excuses or make ourselves invisible-hardly the ideal thing to do. The more invisible you try to be, the more conspicuous your delay becomes; and the more excuses you make, the chances of your getting trap grow more.

Being late to work/meeting is a serious problem, especially if it happens more than a couple of time. Tardiness is not a trait tolerated for too long, and it will certainly come up during your performance review. The first most obvious sign of professional in punctuality. And, if you were otherwise, you’d better learnt to be, at a quickest possible time. It sounds simple but developing a good habit in the hardest things to do. Psychologists have proffered a reward-penalty solution for the problem. Every time you reached your engagement spot on time, congratulate and reward yourself after the event. God tells us in His Word, the Bible, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) How many have sinned? ALL have sinned, that includes you! That means you have to realize and admit you are a sinner. There is a penalty that must be paid for sin. "For the wages of sin is death"(Romans 6:23)

This death is called the second death and Revelation 21:8 tells us what it is and who will go. "The fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolators, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" The second death is eternal separation from God in a literal HELL! We read the word murderers, and also liars. A person only has to murder once to be a murderer, as well as a liar only must lie once to be a liar. The above verse says ALL LIARS, that just above covers everyone. So is there any hope for Heaven?

The answer is YES!!! This is the Good News! "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8) Jesus was the pure sacrifice who shed His blood to pay the sacrifice, before a holy God, for your sin and mine. He says ... "I am the way, the truth and the lifeno man cometh unto the Father but by me." John 14:6)

God wants to give you the gift of Eternal Life in Heaven. There is nothing you can do to earn it, you don't deserve it, but IT IS YOURS! All you have to do is accept it. "But the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE through Christ Jesus the Lord" (Romans 6:23)

Why would God do that? Again, we find our answer in the Bible. John 3:16-18 16."For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

Accept God's FREE GIFT of salvation, believe that Jesus is Lord and ask Him to save you from sin and give you Eternal Life. Romans 10:9-10, 13 9 "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 13. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Remember I said, you CAN know for sure, that is because God says ... "These things have I written unto youthat believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life." (1 John 5:13)

Call upon the Lord Jesus now in prayer. Tell Him that you believe that He is the Son of God and you believe that He died and rose from the dead for you, and that right now you want to receive Him into your life as your personal savior.

Nasty Boss: It is the foremost reason for people to quite their jobs. It is perfectly understandable if you have an abusive or mean boss. THE SCATTERED ZOS IN THE WORLD

By Tungnung Zamlunmang Zou The so called Zo ethnic group nicknamed by other vested interest who by virtue of military power named them in different nomenclatures such as Kuki, Chin and Lushai (Mizo, Zou, Lakhel) who occupied vast areas – say Chindwin River in the east, Haflong in the north, Akyab in the south and Brahmaputra in the west. The Zos for lack of political consciousness could not raise their heads under the sword of divide and rule policy adopted by the British Imperialism.Since time immemorial the so-called Zos also had their suzerainty in Chin Hills under Pu Hauchinkhup, in the present Mizoram (Lushai Hills) under Sailo Chiefs, in Manipur Hills the Guite, the Manlun, the Thadou chiefs occupied the hill portion of the present Manipur State. This goes on until the advent of the British Imperialism. The British expedition completed in 1890 and started dividing the Zo territory into a number of sectors to suit their administrative jurisdictions. The root word Zo From the mouthpiece of our grand parents, it is learnt that the people of Zo hailed from the first three Zo brother Songthu alias Chongthu, Songza and Zahong who first dwelt in a cave known by the people as Khul or Chhinlung or Sinlung or Khur somewhere in China but the exact location is not yet traceable by an scholars in the world. One Burmese diplomat Dr. Vumkhohau says that Zo comes from the word Zo and thus all races, clans of this particular group of Tibeto-Burman directly descended from our ancestor Zo. The same opinion was held by Pu Khupzathang (Capt), a Zo genealogist who writes a book ‘Zo Khang Suutna Liabu’.According to a Burmese scholar Thantun, Tibeto-Burmans probably once inhabited the T’ao valley of Kansu province, once the North West of China. Because of many disturbances made by the Chinese, the Zos might have moved to the north east of Tibet. The Chin under Chinese in 200 BC made further depredations and in order to avoid them, the Zos traveled across ridges and forests and move further south. The journey probably took hundreds of years and eventually they come to the border of Tibet and Burma.The term Zo is an ancient and historical name of the Zo ethnic groups. Before the Zo society evolved into clans-base organization and segmentation, historical records referred them as Yaw, Jo, Chou, and Zhou. The Shan Dynasty’s Chronicles proves this. The Pong (Shan/Tai) kings annals from 80 AD—1604 Ad clearly mentioned the Zo district and the Zos respectively.In the year 862 AD, a Chinese historian, Fan Ch’o Hao in his book already used the word Zo to call a peculiar ethnic group of people. Another scholar, a Catholic Father Vincent, in his book published in 1783 used the word Zo to mention a group of people who have the same practice of livings. Sir Henry Yulu’s narrative of the Mission to the court of Ava in 1885 showed the Chindwin plains and west of the Chindwin River as Zo district. FK Lehman, a renowned Social Anthropologist in this book ‘Structure of the Chin Society’ reiterated the fact that the so called Kuki-Chin linguistic groups has a special term for themselves which appeared as Zo, Yo etc.Dr. Vumkhohau, a Zo scholar and diplomat from Burma, in his profile of the ‘Burmese Frontier Man’ has affirmed that we called ourselves Zo from time immemorial. There are different theories regarding the etymology of the root word Zo.The Zos known by other as Kuki in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam; Chin in Burma and Lushai in Mizoram, Tripura and other Zo occupied areas. Nevertheless, they are the same people descended by Zo. No writers or scholars could make any distinctive classification of division of these people based on custom culture, usages and the way of living. S Carey and Tuck says that there can be no doubt that the Chins and the Kukis, are one and the same race, for their appearance, manners, customs and languages all this conclusion (The Chin Hills, p-155). Further, we can prove the ethnical oneness of the scattered Zos by the same tongues they use, God-Pasian, sky-van, fire-mei, father-pa, mother-nu, grandfather-pu, grandmother-pi, water-tui, king-leengpa etc. A legend records that, like the other nations, Zo too have their own lands and scripts in olden days, which is very much similar to that of eastern nations like Burmese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. But it is very said to mention that it (the script) was stolen by a dog as it was written on scrolling dry leather.Hence, the genesis of Zo comes from the word Zo and no men born on earth could question as yet. The words Kuki, Chin and Lushai as we mentioned in the above have neither any bearing on the culture of these peoples nor have any historical originality except these people have ethnical oneness and lived like one people as that of old Anglicans. But with the passages of time, these people lost their identity of nationhood as divisive forces acted upon them terribly say the Shan, the Burmese, the Chinese, and at last the British Imperialism who subjugated them in the last part of the 19th century. The Rise & Fall of Zos Metternich says that ‘The man who made history have no time to write it’. Very indeed, the Zo leaders who made the Zo history are not known till date but we inherit the fruits of their past actions, good or bad.Though no one can exactly traced the whereabouts of its (Zo) existence, it is believe and accepted that these people did lived, raised and fall like other nations. Most of the Zo thinkers and researchers opined the rise and fall of the Zos in this way: They (Zos) belong to Tibeto-Burman which is of Mongolian stock. The common belief is that Zo first lived in China, before the birth of Christ, probably during the Chou (Zhou) dynasty. In due course of time, these people were harassed by the Chinese kings and ultimately they had to quite China, then moved towards the South west and settled in upper Burma known as Yaw Valley, along the Chindwin River. They reached Yaw valley-upper Chindwin extending up to Kabaw valley sometime in the eight century AD. During their occupation of this Yaw valley, they knew how to cultivate the modern practice of wet-rice field. When they approached from south west of China up to Kabaw valley, they faced no warlords, except some skirmishes with the expeditions of the Shan States, who then begin their infiltration in the upper Burma towards the end of the 13th century. In due course of time, they extended their home rule upto Khampat, and thereby started to have their kingdom without any threat from any quarters. They lived happily and joyfully for about a couple of centuries, i.e. from the 13th to the 15th century. At the beginning of the 15th century AD, they confronted a threat from the Shans who aimed at expanding their suzerainty. The Zos were the second people to face the onslaught of the Thai imperialist who moved upward with their mighty Tai (Thai) force marauding the Burmese and Zos on their way to Assam. This was the first heyday of the Zos so far as we traced the old records of the Zo history.Then, they moved about further south upto the present Chin Hills and started settling in the hill regions, which was then No Man’s Land. After leaving Khampat kingdom, it appears that there was none to trumpet their conscience. From there they scattered all along the hill ranges in different directions, divided into clan-based leadership, which is rampant. Some Zos settled in the Chin Hills and made Tonjang as their head quarter under the leadership of Pu Khanthuam. Some of them moved further southwest called Lushai hills.ZolandLocation: The area occupied by the Zo country, as per the memorandum of ZORO submitted to the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UNO) on May 20, 1995 the area confines between 92’ and 95' E longitude and 20' and 25' N latitude. Are you a prairie chicken or an eagle?

A brave hunter while hunting in the forest, he found an egg that has been laid in the forest by an eagle. Not being able to return an egg to an eagle’s nest which is high above, the next best thing he can do was bring home and put it in the nest of the prairie chicken. The result is predictable. Not noticing anything very different just because of one additional egg, the hen sat on this eagle’s egg, which is among the chicken eggs. By and by, the little eaglet was hatched alongside the prairie chickens. All its life, the young eagle, thinking he was a prairie chicken, did what the prairie chickens did, eat what they eat and walk like one of them. He scratched in the dirt for seeds and insects to eat. He clucked and cackled. Flew like the chicken, unaware of his ability to do so.

Years passed, and the young eagle grew to be a very old bird. One day, he saw a magnificent shape far above him on the cloudless sky. Hanging with graceful majesty on the powerful wind current, it soared with scarcely a beat of its strong golden wings. Unaware of his identity and abilities, “what a beautiful bird!” said the (prairie chicken) eagle to a neighboring prairie. “What is it?” and the neighboring chicken replied, saying, “That’s the eagle – the chief of the birds, but don’t give it a second thought, you could never be like him.” So, the misplaced eagle never gave it another thought. And it died thinking, he is prairie chicken. 

Opps! How sad! Had he been taught that he was an eagle, he would have been flying in the sky like his fellow eagles. Have you ever think/heard of this short story. It’s a very challenging. You and me, like the misplaced eagle have the ability to fly high, but unaware of our ability makes us lived like the eaglet chicken. Now, we should not forget that we are made to be an eagle that is to fly with different colours.
