The history of the Zou or Zo people is preserved through a combination of Chinese chronicles, Burmese historical accounts, European travel writings, British colonial ethnography, linguistic surveys, oral traditions, and modern historical scholarship. These sources document different forms of the name, including Shou, Zou, Zo, Jou, Yo, Yaw, and Dzo. However, the appearance of similar names in historical records does not automatically establish that every reference denotes the same community. Their interpretation requires careful consideration of geography, language, political circumstances, and the historical context in which each account was written (Zou, 2009).
