The sorry plight of Sangaikot Block villagers

An Alarm Bell for Govt Authorities, NGOs, CBOs and any voluntary organisations

Zolengthe and Zogam Today team conducted rapid need assessment in the immediate aftermath of a disaster which was caused by the untamed Guun River (Imphal River) under Sangaikot block of Churachandpur District in Manipur on August 8 and 9 which was funded by Manipur Evangelical Lutheran Church (MELC).

Summary of the Findings:

1. Main transportation/ communication line cut-off. Proper Restoration of the road will take not less than half a year even if the repairing work is executed on a regular daily basis.

2. The Main source of income generation of the area i.e. charcoal related works ceased due to rain and flood.

3. The entire villages situated at the western part of Guun River were severely affected. Eight villages with the population of almost 2000 are the worse hit. Worst affected villages are M. Khaukuol, Khawlmuol, Khuoinuoi, Gunphai, Teisaljang, Singheu, Alpha, Loibual, Phaisan, Taalnuam, Pangsang, Jordan and T. Khuangkhai. There are more than 15 villages which are moderately affected due to the absence of road communication.

4. There are no hopes of harvesting from their hard work paddy fields, farms and kitchen gardens for more than a hundred households. Approximately, 329 hectares of paddy field and 125 ha of agriculture crops are fully damaged.

5. Every household’s lives with less than 50 kg of rice which was provided by Shri Ginsuanhau MLA, 60 ST/Singngat AC.

6. House fully damaged /washed away accounted for 11 while about 243 houses are partially damaged.

7. No health facilities are functioning; the submerged villages and houses have started emitting foul smells of death animals.

8. No proper drinking water facilities, sources of water at present are the rivulets that flow down from the mountain. Filtering systems are hardly use in some places, boiling is out of question at this present moment due to lack of dry firewood.

9. Toilet, all filled with sand and the pits are over-flowed, open defecation cannot be rule out.
Immediate Needs:

The assessment team visited more than 50 households/families within two days. The villagers lamented the same sorry plight of their living conditions. With the help of their MLA, they can sustain for the last one week. They cannot continue with their daily livelihood activities, there is no financial transaction in the area, no petty business being run, no transportation, no food items from their kitchen gardens, everything become on hold for the moment.
